Food safety and traceability
We are a registered food business
Nitrous oxide sold for culinary use is the food additive E942, and packaging and utensils intended to contact food are regulated too. Distributing them makes us a food business under Article 3(2) of assimilated Regulation (EC) 178/2002, so we are registered with Bristol City Council under Article 6(2) of assimilated Regulation (EC) 852/2004 — as every food business must be, at least 28 days before it starts trading.
Food safety management
We operate a documented food safety management system based on HACCP principles, as required by Article 5 of assimilated Regulation (EC) 852/2004. For a storage and distribution business the critical points are goods-in checks, stock rotation, segregation, temperature and humidity in the store, pest control and the integrity of outer packaging.
Everyone who handles stock holds a Level 2 award in Food Safety and is supervised and instructed commensurate with their work, per Annex II Chapter XII.
Traceability
We keep one-up, one-down traceability on everything we hold, as required by Article 18 of assimilated Regulation (EC) 178/2002: for every batch, who we bought it from and who we sold it to. For nitrous oxide the traceability record and the controlled-drug register are the same record, kept to whichever standard is the stricter.
Withdrawal and recall
If we have reason to believe something we have supplied is unsafe we will withdraw it, notify the Food Standards Agency and Bristol City Council without delay under Article 19, and contact every customer who received the affected batch. We test that procedure annually against a mock recall and keep the results.
Food-grade nitrous oxide
Chargers we supply are filled with nitrous oxide meeting the purity criteria for E942 in assimilated Commission Regulation (EU) 231/2012. We obtain a certificate of analysis for each batch and will provide it on request. Medical and industrial grades are different products and we do not supply them.
Food contact materials
Disposables and packaging intended to contact food comply with assimilated Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 and the good manufacturing practice requirements of assimilated Regulation (EC) 2023/2006. We hold a declaration of compliance from the manufacturer for each such line and will pass it on.
Allergens
We do not currently supply prepacked food, so the labelling duties in assimilated Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 and the 2021 amendment known as Natasha’s Law do not bite on our range. If we add food lines, allergen information will be given before you order and again on delivery, which is what distance selling requires.
